The following executive orders and public laws provide authorities for and guide the work of the Office of Insular Affairs and inform the work of the Secretary of the Interior in carrying out responsibilities for the Insular Areas. - Executive Order 6726 – Signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, established the Division of Territories and Island Possessions in the U.S. Department of the Interior on May 29, 1934. This act transferred responsibilities for territories from the Bureau of Insular Affairs, Department of War to Interior.
